CRB Checks
Should you be getting your Workers/Volunteers/Trustees CRB checked?
It has long since been considered good practice for anyone, whether employed or volunteer, working with children or vulnerable adults (which includes the elderly) to undergo a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check. This is to safeguard those who are vulnerable with whom you may come into contact with and yourselves. Furthermore Good Practice would also indicate that these checks be renewed every 3-5 years. This Good Practice is for anyone working with children and/or vulnerable adults who are performing a “Regulated Activity”.
What is a Regulated Activity?
A Regulated Activity is where you are in a position to be a lone adult with a vulnerable person/s, however small the amount of time, on a frequent basis. Some examples are: those within the health service that have direct contact with patients, a Driver transporting vulnerable people to any destination, a lifeguard at a swimming pool, crèche workers or anyone in the education system that has direct contact with students assisting the elderly with shopping etc. If you are unsure whether or not your task is a regulated activity you can always give us a call on (024) 7631 5151and chat it through or look on the CRB website for more guidance: http://www.crb.homeoffice.gov.uk/guidance/rb_guidance/eligible_posts.aspx
How to gain Disclosures
The Volunteer Centre Nuneaton and Bedworth (VCNB) have recently been accepted as an umbrella agency for processing Disclosures and the process is quite straightforward. You call and ask for the number of application forms you require and you will be sent out a pack giving you details of how to check Identification evidence, a contract between your agency and VCNB and a list of Do’s & Don’ts in respect of completing the forms and what can be used for Identification purposes.
Costs
VCNB have agreed a very competitive rate for you to obtain disclosures so for any person taking on a voluntary position the cost would be £12 per application and for any paid employee (or a student on placement) it would be £48. The latter being this higher amount because the Criminal Records Bureau charge £36 for any Enhanced disclosure requested by a Student or paid Employee.
